HISTORY

Anjali was founded by Smt. Anita Shah & Dr. Lalit Shah in 1988. Ever since his graduation from a medical college in India, Dr Shah had a burning desire to improve in some way, lives of needy and underprivileged people of the area where he grew up. He prepared himself for 8 years for the work he wanted to do by working in various hospitals and voluntary organisations to gain medical and management experience.

While working in a voluntary organization in 1982 he met Anita Desai, a co-worker, whom he married in 1983. In 1987 they moved to Ranasan, a village in Sabarkantha district of Gujarat state in India.Instead of forming an organization, Anjali founders started medical practice in Ranasan in May, 1987, with the intention of knowing the local population and the area, and building rapport with patients and villagers. Anjali Society for Rural Health &Development was registered with charity commissioner in 1988 as Public Trust and Registered Society. Dr Shah’s medical practice came to an end after 18 months in November, 1988.

BEGINNING

As founders themselves were the workers and had not been in private practice long enough, the resources were limited. All the medicines, furniture and equipments of the private medical practice were donated to Anjali and a small health center called Gramin Arogya Kendra (Village Health Center) with 5 workers including the founders was started in a rented house in Ranasan. As rapport with community already existed as a result of time spent in private practice, the Gramin Arogya Kendra was readily accepted by the community.

The process of moving Anjali from a concept to reality got a big boost when a family of village Ranasan purchased and donated 3.5 acres of land in prime location and USA based Share & Care Foundation showed desire to assist Anjali in constructing hospital.

Construction on the donated land started in 1991, OPD block was inaugurated in 1992 and activities of Anjali shifted to OPD block. The construction of the hospital was completed in May 1993 and a 30 bed hospital was inaugurated and named Anjali Hospital.

ACCREDITATION BY CREDIBILITY ALLIANCE

Credibility Alliance is a collective of voluntary organizations, which come together to enhance the credibility of the voluntary sector and build confidence among all stakeholders including the public, the government, the donor community and the corporate sector. It plans to achieve this by enhancing transparency, accountability through good governance within the sector by the promotion and adoption of ‘norms’ of governance evolved through consultation with a large number of VO throughout the country.

Accountability and Transparency are the key issue in governance, and Anjali expected to set benchmark in this regard, and hence the organization had gone for Accreditation by Credibility Alliance, Mumbai in April, 2009. By Accrediting, Anjali will become the member of Accreditation Alliance for 5 years, and at the end of the 5 year, the membership needs to be renewed.
